Rip Curl Indonesia Announces First-Ever Rip Curl Pro Mentawai at Macaronis.
After the smashing success of last year's ISC event at Lance's Right, Indonesia's top surfers are frothing to return to the Mentawais – this time to the perfect lefts of Macaronis. “Even though I'm a regularfoot, Macaronis is one of my favorite waves,” said Pepen Hendrik, who finished No. 3 overall on the ISC Tour in 2011. “I still can't believe we get to surf there in a contest this year. This really is the 'Dream Tour."
In addition to a 65 million IDR prize purse, the surfers will be competing for one of the most coveted invitations in professional surfing. The winner of the Rip Curl Pro Mentawai will be granted a wildcard entry into the Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang Invitational (July 15 – Aug. 26, 2012), the most prestigious event of the Indonesian surf season.
The Governor of West Sumatra Province, Bapak Irwan Prayitno, said he is confident that the Rip Curl Pro Mentawai presented by the Mentawai Government will showcase the region's renowned waves and hospitality to a global audience like never before.
“West Sumatra is blessed with some of the world's best surfing,” Bapak Prayitno said. “We are honored to host these amazing athletes from all over Asia and share the best the Mentawais has to offer with them. This will undoubtedly be the most spectacular surfing event Indonesia has ever seen.”
The Regent of the Mentawai Islands, Bapak Yudas Sabaggalet, commented that the people of the Mentawai Islands are excited about the first-ever professional surf contest at Macaronis and the economic benefit it represents for tourism in their region.
“This contest is very important to the people of the Mentawai Islands because it represents a unique opportunity to grow our marine tourism and surf travel industries,” Bapak Sabaggalet said. “We are proud to be working with the ISC and ASC Tours and would like to thank Rip Curl for helping make this historic event possible. We hope this will be the first of many great surfing competitions at world-famous Macaronis.”
During the event at Macaronis, Rip Curl will be working with the nearby village of Silabu, located on North Pagai Island in the southern region of the Mentawai Islands, to help provide new toliets to each household. The new toilets will help improve sanitation and quality of life for the people living in this remote community. In addition, Rip Curl and ROLE Foundation will plant native trees in the area to offset the carbon footprint of the event and help reforest part of the island that was destroyed by the October 2010 tsunami.
Both projects will be funded entirely by the sale of the Rip Curl Pro Mentawai event t-shirt, designed by acclaimed American artist and veteran Mentawai surfer Phil Goodrich. The limited-edition event t-shirt designed by Goodrich will be available at all Rip Curl stores across Indonesia beginning in May.
The Rip Curl Pro Mentawai now represents the third jewel in Rip Curl's trilogy of elite Coca Cola ISC Tour events, joining the Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang Invitational and the Rip Curl Surf & Music Festival at Kuta's Halfway Beach, the final event of the 2012 ISC season.
