2009 RipCurl West Sumbawa Pro set to run Saturday in pumping surf

West Sumbawa, Indonesia

After five straight days of pumping surf in Indonesia, the opening heat of the 2009 RipCurl West Sumbawa Pro is ready to run in good overhead waves tomorrow morning at a powerful left reefbreak somewhere in West Sumbawa. Contest directors have called for surfers to be ready and on standby at 7 a.m. Saturday morning for an 8 a.m. anticipated start.

The third stop of the Indonesian Surfing Championship boasts a prize purse of 64 million rupiah and a field of 60 of the top surfers from across the Indonesian archipelago. A large camp has been set up at the beach for the contest, being held in conjunction with the 2009 West Sumbawa Beach Festival. Together, the local government and RipCurl have set up a small surf city, complete with beach volleyball courts, bamboo showers, massive tent set ups, pool tables, ping pong, boats and skis and a big kitchen with the local ladies cooking up a storm. A big stage and sound system have also been set up for a Battle of the Bands. The swell has been firing for days and the West Sumbawa Pro is set to go off.
