2008 Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang – Winner Gets Wild Card Entry to ASP ‘CT Rip Curl Pro Search “Somewhere”, plus Double Prize Money and 3,500 ISC Championship Points!
In what promises to be the highlight of the 2008 ISC Tour, Indonesia’s 32 best pro surfers will paddle out the channel from Padang-Padang Beach in Bali to take on Bali’s most fearsome and notorious wave in the Rip Curl Cup Padang-Padang.
Known for its picturesque beauty, board-breakingly powerful thick lipped tubes, and back-raking razor sharp coral reef, the honor of paddling out to take on this ferocious dragon in a private competition setting is one reserved for a selected few each year.
And what catapults this years Rip Curl Cup into the position of being the most highly contested and memorable event in history is that the 2008 Rip Curl Cup will not only be an ISC 6-star Prime event with double the prize money and extra ISC Championship points, the winner will also receive a wild card entry in the 2008 ASP Rip Curl Pro Search event to be held in an as yet undisclosed “Somewhere” location! This will also be the first time for an Indonesian surfer to ever compete in a WCT event.
Imagine both winning the 2008 Rip Curl Cup, taking home Rp 20 million in prize money and 3,500 ISC Championship points, AND surfing in an ASP World Championship Tour event against the Top 44 pro surfers in the world! It can’t get any better than that can it?
Already entering its 5th year, the prestigious Rip Curl Cup Padang-Padang is the most highly anticipated event of the year. In a departure from the usual process of holding a Trial event in order to parse down the competitive field to the Top 32, this year’s Top 32 will gain entry solely on the basis of their performance in the first three events of the 2008 ISC Tour. Last years Rip Curl Cup saw several internationally known names on Trials heat draw including, Kamalei Alexander, Jason Frederico, David Cantrell, Liam McNamara, John John Florence, Koby Abberton, Benji Weatherly, and others. Unlike last year, his year’s event will be exclusively for ISC member surfers,
And as Padang-Padang is equally notorious for its capricious nature as its quality of offering, hesitant to make an appearance until all conditions are met to its whimsical fancy, each year a waiting period is required to allow sufficient time for it to produce its best. For 2008, the Rip Curl Cup will start its three-week waiting period on July 12 and it will end on July 28th.
